In pre-Covid 2019, 68% of the UK workforce commuted by car. Successive lockdowns challenged the way many worked, with almost half of working adults working from home at times during the pandemic. While Covid-19 remains as an ongoing issue, lockdown restrictions have lifted and across the UK, people are free to travel. However, people are continuing to work from home, at least some of the time, which has implications for car retailing.

Workers asked about their future working location plans in February 2022, saw more than 8 in 10 people who had to work from home during the coronavirus pandemic saying that they planned to hybrid work, both working at home and their usual place of work.

Since then, the proportion of those people who are hybrid working has risen from 13% in early February 2022 to 24% in May 2022. The percentage working exclusively from home has fallen from 22% to 14% in the same period.

Travelling to work exclusively has been the most common working pattern since national restrictions were lifted, with 46% of workers doing this in late April and early May 2022. Nevertheless, there has been a subtle shift in weekday travel.

In the year to March 31st this year, car and taxi traffic rebounded from lockdown, increasing by 32.9%, to 237.5 billion vehicle miles, when compared to the year ending March 2021. However, this volume remained down -9.6% when compared to the pre-pandemic year ending December 2019.

The fall in mileage can, at least in part, be attributed to the change in work patterns as some people work from home.

Weekend travel is broadly back to pre-pandemic levels.

Hybrid workers still need to travel to work, albeit not as frequently. Some previous car owners may choose to move away from a car, but non-urban people are likely to require more persuasion in light of the challenges facing some areas of public transport.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) data reveals that hybrid and homeworking increased by income bracket. More than a third (38%) of workers earning £40,000 or more hybrid worked between 27 April and 8 May 2022. Lower earners were less likely to report hybrid working. In short, travelling to work was the most common working pattern for all income groups earning up to £40,000,

Pre-Covid, 35% of households owned two or more cars. While this number may have fallen as the overall parc has declined, the wealthier demographic of hybrid workers and their continuing commuting need, albeit less frequently suggests that the rationale for owning multiple cars will remain valid for most hybrid working households.

The inevitable conclusion of the change in working patterns for car retailing is that it may not be as dramatic as first indicated. While separate considerations, the cost-of-living crisis and for some, CAZ/ULEZ costs should not be ignored in assessing the impact of the social change driven by hybrid-working on car selection, or not.

Lower-paid workers are most likely to commute; add in the impact of the cost-of-living crisis, and it seems car changes may become extended.

Increased demand for older, cheaper cars, perhaps most notably petrol cars due to fuel cost and CAZ implications (the general rule is that to travel within a CAZ without a charge, a vehicle has to be at least a Euro 4 emission standard compliant petrol model - in other words, registered after January 2006 - or, if it is a diesel, compliant with Euro 6 standards (registered after September 2015)

Annual mileage and therefore servicing and maintenance needs may have declined

Having drawn our conclusions in the most likely trends for used cars, the latest used car data from Indicata supported our hypothesis on rising demand for older used cars. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) moved from being the fastest-selling fuel type in August to the slowest-selling in September as the market turned to buying cheaper used petrol, diesel and hybrid cars.

What makes the Inspiring Automotive Women Awards different you ask? Anyone can nominate a woman from the industry who they believe is making a real difference, and is inspiring other women around them, regardless of role!

Lisa's involvement in the hosting of our International Women's Day virtual event has been celebrated by many around the business for boldly sharing the struggles of women in business to help break the bias, inspiring others to also speak out and progress within their career.

“The book that has always stuck with me is The Choice by Edith Eger. Edith at the age of 16 was sent to Auschwitz, her story from there is truly unimageable. This book is so much more than just her account of the Holocaust but a book that shares profound insight into the power of a mindset and resilience. Edith explores the idea that we can’t choose some things that happen to us but we do have the power to choose how we handle them. Against all odds she went on to achieve extraordinary things. Edith is a truly inspiring women and the lessons the book shares have always stuck with me in my personal and work life.”




Dedicated to supporting women in the workplace, Laura founded the 'One Aldermore' Female Network to inspire future female leaders and has also been a key driver behind the planning of events around women’s mental health.

“One of my favourite quotes is ‘People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel’.





Nominated for her work on promoting gender balance, Claire was a key part in the launch of our all women's network, GROW, inspiring women across the industry to progress in their career. 

“I am truly inspired and humbled by both my mum and my sister in equal measure. They are caring, patient, hardworking women who have faced great challenges, yet both continue to show compassion, empathy and resilience each and every day.”



The awards are a stepping stone to motivating women to progress further within the industry, and we’re proud our teams are a part of that.

Celebrating our Inspiring Automotive Women Award winners

Last year, we launched a brand-new initiative to recognise and celebrate our dealer network with an annual awards ceremony. The Extra Mile Awards are a chance for us shine a spotlight on our dealerships who are going above and beyond, it's not about volumes or cases; this is for dealers who provide that excellent experience in the customer journey, consider the wider community and are forward thinking in their approach to business. The awards allow us to shout from the rooftops of the great work our dealer partners are doing and share their success with those at the heart of both of our businesses, our customers.

This year, we’re back with even more awards to celebrate our dealerships!



Over three nomination periods, our Account Managers in the North, South and Major Accounts Division will nominate their bike, car and van dealerships they think should be recognised. We’ll select one winner in each bespoke category; Customer Journey Award, Community Impact Award, Partnership Award, Diversity & Inclusion Award, Sustainability Award and Leadership Award.

The Extra Mile Awards are back!

Dealers are adapting to the ever-changing operating landscape, with used car volumes for the year now expected to be circa 6.74M units, according to Cox Automotive. Encouragingly there is consumer demand. In part, this is a continuation of the impact of new car shortages. There is also anecdotal evidence pointing to how people are adapting to the cost of living crisis by trading down to smaller and cheaper cars. It is a move being joined by an increased focus on EVs or all variants.

Demand for our range of stock funding options remains strong. The demand is being driven by dealers switching from other funding options, which were more costly or replacing government-backed loans utilised by dealers during the lockdown periods. Our stocking provides clear sight of the impact of consumer demand for used cars and continuing wholesale supply limitations, with values continuing to hold up overall. As noted previously, the demand for EVs and their scarcity means their values are particularly strong, while ICEs are seeing slight declines, particularly in higher value stock.

The Bank of England has introduced successive rises to its base rate to counter rising inflation. The latest increase has seen this rate rise to 2.25% from 1.75%. It is the highest rate since November 2008. However, it is unlikely to be the last such rise, and the financial markets suggest the base rate could climb to 6%. To take a positive from this gloomy forecast, upper rates forecasts have been reined in following changes in upper-level tax plans.

According to Moneyfacts data published at the end of September, average unsecured loan rates hit their highest in six years; more rises are widely expected. All lending forms are set to see further rate increases based on the higher costs of money that exist in the money markets. 

Another pressure point in lending for all regulated firms, including dealers and brokers, will be the regulatory need to ensure any new loans are affordable for customers. After an extended low inflation and low-interest period, this step will be essential to ensure people do not over-commit themselves.

The overall conclusion is that the used vehicle market looks set to flatten in the next few weeks. As we move towards the tail-end of the year, we can expect the usual slowing in transactions. The tailwinds of low consumer confidence and rising interest rates are likely to see used car demand focus on the cost of purchase and use.

Q4: the used car and financing outlook

We live and work in an increasingly diverse and socially aware environment. Reflecting that diversity is crucial to us all in serving our customers and in recruiting and retaining the talent we need to push our businesses forward. Added to a focus on diversity must be creating an inclusive environment where everyone knows that they can contribute, be recognised and realise their potential.

I am delighted to see the momentum that continues to build to support Diversity & Inclusion (D&I). The Automotive 30 Club aims to fill at least 30% of key leadership positions in member organisations with diverse women by 2030. The IMI, with its Diversity Task Force and the SMMT, with its Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, are just some of the exciting initiatives helping to promote and improve D&I across our industry. It is making an impact.

I want to highlight the importance of role models and their importance in developing and retaining talent. Such role models can demonstrate that career development is possible for everyone; they can also highlight the value of inclusivity. Not everyone aspires to be a business leader, but a business that shows everyone can be heard and recognised will surely have a more motivated, engaged team.

I want to highlight two role models from MotoNovo, who illustrate the value of a positive D&I approach that can benefit all businesses regardless of scale.

In late September, the Women in Credit Awards were held in London. The awards champion the work of incredible women across the entire credit and financial services industry. I was delighted to see two of my colleagues winning awards and, in doing so, champion the value of D&I in its broadest sense.

Across the automotive industry, we can never get enough good people. Something that has become evident within MotoNovo as our D&I programme has gained momentum is that sometimes, the talent sought is right there in front of you.

National Account Manager Shamaila Madeley, who has worked in the automotive finance sector for over twenty years, was recognised as Colleague of the Year. Cathy Addicott, one of our Customer Relationship Advisors, won the Lifetime Achievement Award. Hardly newcomers to the industry, both have flourished in an environment without barriers to success.

Cathy is a role model, customer service care champion, and senior generation hero. For someone whose passion is to be on the phone, helping customers to win the Lifetime Achievement Award was a thrill. Shamaila's energy and commitment have always been there, but as the Colleague Award criteria suggested, she may have been 'previously overlooked for achievement-type awards'; not now.

For both, the game-changer in their careers and recognition has been seizing the opportunities MotoNovo's D&I programme afforded, gaining confidence and thriving. They and MotoNovo have benefitted, including their colleagues who can see that career development and recognition are achievable.

Our role models reveal at a human level the value a positive approach to D&I can have. I hope they inspire you and your business to seek out similar gains.

The importance of diversity & inclusion across motor retailing

The UKCSI is the UK’s largest cross-sector customer benchmarking study engaging with over 10,000 customers who created 45,000 responses across thirteen market sectors. On customer feedback, market from 0 – 100, MotoNovo’s ranking represents a very positive result for the business, which was benchmarked against many of the UK’s most prominent banking and building society brands.

Across the UKCSI, only First Direct’s (86.6) customers rated their customer experience better than the experience rated by MotoNovo Finance’s customers. It meant the business outperformed highly regarded entrants such as Starling Bank and Metro and ahead of the established High Street brands who all took part in the exercise.


MotoNovo outperformed the banking/building society sector in crucial activities, including; Experience, Emotional Connection, Customer Ethos and Ethics. In terms of the key benchmarking of being easy to work with, MotoNovo comfortably led the way in its market sector.

Customer likelihood to recommend MotoNovo, created a separate Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 54.6, which was more than double the sector average (24), which itself was marginally ahead of the all-sector NPS of 23.5.

Reflecting upon MotoNovo’s success, Chris Rowthorn, Director of Motor Sales Operations, noted;

“We are thrilled with the latest benchmark result from the UK Institute of Customer Service, which sustains the theme from previous results. It is a stellar result for our dealer and broker clients and us. High levels of customer satisfaction saw a significant 8.5 out of 10 ranking from customers for their intention to remain with us in the future. Since dealers and brokers are critical to our distribution, this is great news for them as well. After all, we are in this together.”
