The Bennetts British Superbike (BSB) Championship is delighted to announce a new partnership with MotoNovo Finance, one of the country's industry-leading motor finance providers, as it joins forces with the UK's biggest motorsport series as an Official Sponsor for the 2022 season.

Widely recognised as one of the industry's most innovative vehicle finance providers, MotoNovo will be riding into the new partnership with Bennetts BSB at Silverstone this Easter when the 2022 Championship gets underway. MotoNovo will feature at each of this season's 11 rounds with prominent trackside branding and global television visibility.

A prominent, multi-award-winning provider of  car, van and motorcycle finance for over 40 years, MotoNovo is one of the UK's most significant players. The business' brand and expertise are in evidence across dealers throughout the UK, helping them assist people in getting behind the wheel – or for motorbikes, handlebars – of their chosen method of transport.

The partnership is enhanced further with Associate Sponsor status with the Pirelli National Superstock and Junior Superstock Championships, highlighting the crucial manufacturers' rankings in the two classes. The Superstock classes are hugely significant to the manufacturers competing for the title, as the motorcycles are similar to the showroom counterparts, which race fans can purchase from local dealerships. 

Reflecting upon their support, Managing Director, Karl Werner, notes:

A total monthly budget of £151 - £250 is the most common set by consumers (48% of total)

This is what 2,479 used car finance customers told us in recent research.

As the crucial used car buying Millennial and Generation Z generations face up to rising inflation and successive Bank of England base rate increases, which most will never have experienced in their adult lives, the significance of customers' monthly budgets and affordability is set to escalate.

Inflation is now at a thirty year high of 5.5% (CPIH), according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Worryingly, the Office for Budget Responsibility has predicted UK inflation is now set to average 7.4% this year.

Bank of England has warned it could rise above 7% this year. Rising petrol/diesel costs and increasing used car price rises feature prominently in the primary drivers of inflation.

Faced with a squeeze on their cost of living, monthly budgeting, which has always featured prominently in consumers' car buying decision-making processes, is likely to have an extra area of focus.

Managing Director, Karl Werner, reflects that dealers can help car buyers by ensuring peoples' budgets are at the heart of their thinking, noting,

"Dealers should not underestimate the impact of the cost of living increases we see and that look set to continue. They can help themselves by building this thinking into their marketing, one-to-one communication and stock buying.

Dealers may wish to consider the potential for utilising budgetary range insights from their customers' previous purchases and running cost information into their stock buying in a timely twist on the 'buy right to sell right' mantra."

What do you think was the driving force behind your win? 

Winning the Customer Journey Award is a great achievement to us, as we’re extremely passionate about customer service and aftercare. It’s a main priority for our entire team to ensure a relaxed, informative and smooth approach to car sales and purchasing for our new and returning customer base.

What MotoNovo products/offerings help enhance the customer experience?

The Self-Serve and E-Sign options have been a huge help in aiding customer purchases and sales as it very convenient for all. MotoRate also aids us to keep in line with transparency and fairness for our customers, which ourselves and the customers really appreciate!

How do you help customers understand what finance options are available?

To help customers understand finance options, we have a finance page on our website which includes videos explaining the difference of HP and PCP. Additionally, the team are always more than willing to speak in person or on the phone with customers to answer any questions and queries they have regarding finance.

Tell us a bit more about your work with iOffset?

We want to provide a Climate Action Solution for customers, as the focus on the automotive industry intensifies with the ban on new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars from 2030. iOffset’s mission is to spearhead an international carbon reduction and offsetting culture, making it easy and affordable for individuals/businesses to reduce and offset their unavoidable emissions through carbon removal projects. Through significant investment in technology, marketing and advertising, iOffset will turbo-charge consumer action and make change happen. For example, iOffset audited the emissions from over 3,000 cars presented for sale and quantified an average of 1.9 tonnes of CO2 per 10,000 miles. The result? We offset 2.5 tonnes of CO2 for every car sold.

What would you like to achieve with your partnership?

This is just the start. We’re one of the UK’s leading car supermarkets and we’ve partnered up to help by not only offsetting the emissions of all used cars sold (first year/10,000 miles), but also providing iOffset access to thousands of people a month to engage with, spread the word and start the carbon reduction debate in a meaningful way.

How has your dealership got to where it is today?

Perrys has been around for 114 years. We’ve reached this remarkable achievement by navigating through two world wars, many recessions, and multiple Governments each with their own view on fiscal policy and taxation. You can only achieve success in business for 114 years with great people around you.

By listening well. Every customer reacts differently and understanding their own behaviour, needs and requirements can’t be rushed. Some customers are multi time buyers, others are first timers, we need to adjust accordingly.

A strong team with an abundance of experience who are able to react to change without fear of taking one step backwards to move two steps forwards in order to deliver a high level of service to our customers.

Despite storms battering the country in February, it was evident that consumers were determined to embrace the call to learn to live with Covid-19 as retail footfall across the UK moved closer to pre-virus levels. Our finance activity also reflected the trend as MotoNovo finished the month with an all-time record performance.

It was so encouraging to see that retail footfall saw the highest number of shoppers since pre-pandemic levels in the last week of the month, according to the British Retail Consortium. While the retail data is primarily focused on High Street, shopping centres and retail parks, the final week trends reported were mirrored precisely in our activity. For context, the UK's retail footfall led the top 5 European markets' footfall recovery.

Over recent months at MotoNovo, we have completed a tremendous amount of work that I've no doubt contributed to our record performance. We concluded a project to improve acceptance levels, launched our business strategy focusing on an all-new target operating model designed to create better ways of working and saw some impressive business successes, welcoming several new dealers and brokers. Looking ahead, there is more positive news in the pipeline. For this, I must recognise the dedication of our fantastic team; thank you one and all.

However, looking beyond the activities we control, my instinct is that the increase in footfall is about something more human.

I sense we have seen a genuine desire for togetherness. People are pleased to be out and about and working to create the new normal that has been referenced widely. We see from the huge uplift in face-to-face contact dealers are pleased to see us, and all the feedback from customers reflects similar views.

While there are certainly plenty of challenges economically and on a global level,  politically, it appears  normal personal contact has gained in popularity. I echo the support for this trend. I was delighted to meet, talk and listen to our team face-to-face for the first time in a very long time as we re-started our Town Hall gatherings in person. MS Teams has been an enormous help and will continue to feature prominently, but for me, face-to-face with its total engagement is always going to be my preferred option.

As retail footfall returns, MotoNovo delivers record activity

I think we all know that recruiting and retaining talent has become increasingly challenging over the last year. With this in mind, it was good to see dealers promoting the successes and opportunities for apprentices across the country during National Apprenticeship Week, February 7th – 13th.

While I know there are apprentice roles beyond the more traditional areas referenced in trade media of trainee service advisers, apprentice technicians and parts advisers; these were the ones that were highlighted most commonly. However, as we all know, motor retailing is an increasingly omnichannel environment. There are opportunities for people from all walks of life to take on roles across motor retailing, including the supplier chains.

In today's increasingly digitally and socially engaged marketplace, the role and scope of apprenticeship opportunities for candidates and employers are growing ever wider. While the traditional concept of apprenticeship opportunities may have been centred upon a person, often male, learning a trade under the guidance of a time-served expert. The model is changing rapidly now and today, we see apprenticeships providing viable career routes to university education.

The apprentice landscape is changing by age, gender, type of industry and opportunities. The shift can play an important role not just in bridging skills gaps but by helping to enhance the diversity and inclusiveness of our industry.

The Aldermore Group, of which MotoNovo Finance is a core constituent, is on a mission to promote the value and opportunities afforded by apprenticeships. Currently, we offer 36 different development pathways, categorised into three areas:

The net result is that groupwide, we have sixty apprentices studying professional qualifications that include; Data Analytics, Leadership, Software Development, Compliance & Risk, Customer Service, Business Administration, HR, Accountancy and Digital Marketing. Skills that, to many, may be very different to those connected with perceived apprentice activities. Many of these types of roles will be found in today's dealer groups.

71% of apprentices remain with the same employer on completion of their qualification.

90% of apprentices stay in work post-apprenticeship

In sharing my thoughts on developing tomorrow's talent, I started consciously by focusing upon the great work in developing apprentices already underway by many motor retailers. I hope to have added in this article the opportunity across our industry to broaden the span of apprentice roles.

While in some quarters, there may have been a belief that apprenticeships were an inferior option compared to going to university, this need not be true. In pretty much every area of business, creating meaningful apprentice roles can help open the doors to both young people and older adults to create fulfilling, boundaryless careers and enhance perceptions of our industry.
