What does helping the community mean to you?
It means so much because we are in a position where we can put back into the community, so we do. The community around us helped us to get where we are today.

How do you choose which charities you raise money for?
We annually review the charities we donate to as a team and the majority wins – it’s a simple process. There is no ‘main’ charity as we also actively help charities abroad as well as the local ones.

How do you raise awareness of your charity work?
Mainly via the website on our blog page, we are careful about what we post on social media and use this sparingly, however we do often make a visual impact in the showroom.

What MotoNovo products or initiatives have been an asset to your dealership?
MotoRate has been a significant game changer for us. I could see Liam, our Account Manager, truly believed in it and I’m happy to report the sales team also fully embrace MotoRate, and I’m convinced it’s an excellent product where the customer, Motonovo and KCS all greatly benefit.

How did MotoNovo support you through the pandemic?
Motonovo were truly fantastic during the pandemic offering support and advice throughout. Justin Clements, Head of Motor, also arranged regular Zoom meetings with several independent dealers which was hugely beneficial. Motonovo easily offered the best support to dealers out of all our suppliers and providers.

How do you think this past year could impact/change the future of the car buying industry?
I believe our industry has witnessed a Covid accelerator of at least 5 years. The vast majority of consumers still want to touch and feel the vehicle before committing to a purchase, however most consumers are now doing all their research with their thumbs rather than their feet which has streamlined our business.

Over the past year, how have you dealt with the shift to the online car buying journey?
We’ve updated our website and advertising channels, embraced video calling and technology, been much more open to delivering vehicles across the nation and accepted the change that has been forced upon us and made the very most of it.

Tell us what a typical day looks like in your dealership? 
Busy! On a personal level I oversee everything and aim to keep not only the team happy and motivated but the customer experience as smooth, simple and positive as possible.

How has your dealership adapted to social distancing requirements?
We follow Government guidelines, had an inspection from the HSE which we passed with flying colours, have screens on all desks, distancing measures in place, hand sanitiser dotted around the business and signage clearly identifying the rules on site.

What are your top tips for providing excellent customer service every time?
Simple really, treat the customer how I would want to be treated if I was buying car or visiting a business. It really is that simple. Be polite, be patient, be positive and treat people like friends and they will enjoy the experience.

Customers could win £1,000 off their vehicle finance

Some thoughts on what the 'new normal' could look like for car dealers marketing used cars. I'm going to reserve these for the car buying experience because all other factors being equal; for me, adapting to the critical importance of an obsession with customer experience, offline and online, is the opportunity to help make dealers vital.

It feels like an obvious statement, but the re-opening of showrooms does not mean that everyone buying a used car will want to visit a showroom. After all, a new breed of online used car retailers is banking upon it! Nor does the emergence of online retailers mean everyone will choose to buy from them. The opportunity for traditional dealers is to provide an authentic, personal experience online and offline to meet the needs of each potential customer. Much of this does start online.

The only parts of used car buying that cannot be completed digitally are the test drive and the 'test drive' of the supplying dealer, their culture and values. These are both essential practical and, arguably more importantly, emotional, trust-building levers for many used car buyers. Most people will still want to visit a showroom, but which showroom may depend very much on the emotional digital experience and the dealer’s personality and credibility.

Giving some extra thought about the digital experience for car buyers can yield some real golden nuggets. I'm thinking about a dealer's personality, values, culture, history, tone of voice, how and the speed with which enquiries are handled and the quality of reviews. Investing in these emotional cues can be an excellent investment, as is giving customers the choice of online and offline when it comes to buying a car.

Looking at the dealers on MotoNovo's used car marketplace findandfundmycar.com and its range of over 2,000 dealers and 140,000+ cars, over 80% are continuing to provide a distance sale choice. It seems I could be pushing at an open door.

Back to the buying experience, offline and online, in the showroom and at a distance, success rests in going the extra mile for every customer, every time no exception. It is about making the dealership easy to buy from for a consumer rather than selling to them. At the heart of this is good old-fashioned relationship building, listening, responding quickly, asking questions – being personal and it is here that dealers have a potential advantage.

We recently published some data that says that this is happening. From February 2020 to March 2021, during pandemic conditions, 143,485 MotoNovo customers gave their used car buying experience a Net promotor Score (NPS) rating of 84.27. According to Bain & Co, who created the NPS system, this rating is defined as 'world-class'.

These numbers are staggering and bring me back to my final and arguably most important point. The greatest challenge for used car dealers could well be perceptions. In reality, most car buyers are delighted by their experience, but negative perceptions persist. It won't happen overnight, but changing perceptions, especially online, is something that would help the whole dealer community.

Offline and online used car sales - dealers must continue to go the distance

Access to quality used vehicles can sometimes be a challenge for dealers, especially if you’re a Northern Irish dealer. Acquiring stock from mainland UK and increasing accessibility is even more important. Enter Supplier Direct Funding.
